Tips for Fall Portraits

Summer is nearly over, school is beginning, and fall is almost here!  Which means it's time to update your family and/or children's portraits.  It's a great time of year as the temperatures will cool down and leaves will begin to change.  Plus a great opportunity for holiday/Christmas cards and gift prints for family and friends.

1. Selecting your Photographer
Take a look through several photographers portfolios to help you decide which one suits your style preference.  Do you prefer all posed, lifestyle (candid), or a little of both?  I offer a little of both as I feel it's important to have traditional posed images as well as some candid shots.  The candid help tell a story about the family and make fun collages and albums.

2.  Schedule early!
The fall is the busiest season for most photographers.  Don't wait until the last minute or you may not find a photographer available.  I start scheduling in late July/August for the fall season.

3. Location
Location plays an important part to the style of your session.  Do you want an urban or rural feel?  Does your family enjoy city life or nature?  Your photographer should be able to advise you on location ideas.  Check out these ideas!

4. Preparing for your Session
As soon as you secure your portrait session begin planning your child(ren's) and/or family's outfits.
I recommend solid colors and simple patterns.  It's always classy!  Please avoid logos and loud patterns.  There are also some colors that are difficult to photograph including white, neon colors, and red.  Neutral colors always work well and you can add colorful jewelry, scarves, and hats. One idea is to choose one outfit that has multiple colors and pull solid colors from it for the rest of the family. Don't forget about your shoes and socks, avoid stained socks.  Check out this Pinterest Board for ideas.  The night before lay out all of your family's clothing so that you are not rushed finding important pieces.
